The Dutch Reformed Church and Pastorie
The NG Congregation was established in 1880 and had its first church building at Moreson at the other end of Barrydale.
The church became too small for the congregation and in 1905 a decision was taken by the Dutch Reformed congregation to build a new church. An enormous fund-raising effort realised €5000, which made the venture possible. The contractors were Ledbury and Moon, who were famous for their work on public buildings throughout the Overberg. With its handsome clock tower, stained glass and lancet windows, wooden ceiling and choir gallery, the church is a fine example of early 20th century South African church architecture. It seats 600 people. The church clock and its chiming bells have been in operation since 1908, when the house of worship was opened. The church is Barrydale’s most famous landmark.
The pastorie next door was built in 1897 by JP Kennedy of Robertson, (who probably also built the hotel). Photographs from the late 1800s show an elegant residence with pillared front veranda covered by a corrugated iron roof, and a gabled stoepkamer. The path to the front door was lined by cypress trees.the Minister at the time was G.P Vand der Merwe.
The Organ for the Church was built by the company Norman and Beard from Norwich England and installed in 1908 .
A plaque near the front door of the church bears the following inscription (translated into English):
In time of hardship and trial
You are in the Cloud
That lies on the Langeberg
And feeds the Mountain Streams.
In prosperity You
Are in the spring blossom
Of apricot and peach tree
That in the summer
Bears red and yellow fruits.
